The State Bar of South Dakota was created as an
integrated bar by an Act of the South Dakota Legislature in 1931.
The Bar was organized on August 20, 1931 at the Alex Johnson Hotel
in Rapid City, South Dakota. The meeting was called by notice
of the South Dakota Supreme Court and chaired by Hon. Samuel C.
Polley, its then Presiding Judge. The Committee on Organization
and By-Laws consisted of F.D. Wicks, chairperson, Philo Hall,
W.W. French, M.A. Brown, C.A. Davis, Karl Goldsmith, Louis Benson,
and R.C. Hayes.
Membership in the State Bar as a requirement to practice law
in South Dakota became effective January 1, 1932. The initial
membership was 339 attorneys. Its predecessor organization was
the South Dakota Bar Association which had been formed December
7, 1897 at the Courthouse in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It had
a charter membership of 79 attorneys.
