Hurricane
Katrina Lawsuits
Hurricane Katrina personal injury lawsuits have been taking the
Gulf Coast by storm as personal damages are still being assessed.
Since Huricane Katrina hit, lawsuits have been filed regarding
nursing homes and hospitals that failed to evacuated. Reports
of wrongful deaths and injuries have been many. Contacting a Louisiana
personal injury lawyer or even more specifically, a
New Orleans personal injury lawyer may be in the best interests
to those who suffered damage or loss due to the actions or negligence
of another.
It will take time for the courts to determine if some hospital
and nursing home workers abandoned patients or if simply failing
to evacuate put both practitioners and patients in harms way.
Lawsuits have also been filed regarding violence in the New Orleans
Superdome and Convention Center (malicious acts), prisoners hurt
and pets that were in the care of others being abandoned.
Besides the many criminal trials that are occuring and have occured,
civil trials regarding negligence and abuse are also ongoing.
Hospitals and nursing homes may be found negligent for failing
to evacuate patients that were hurt or died as the result of the
Katrina hurricane. Malicious acts by others may be prosecuted
both in criminal courts and civil courts.
Other lawsuits being filed will be for price gouging during the
Hurricane Katrina crisis. In Florida, Attorney General Charlie
Crist has filled a lawsuit against Tallahassee-based Swifty Stars
for price gouging at the gasoline pumps.
Also in Florida, several bogus Hurricane Katrina donation websites
had sprung up and charges were filed against the owner of katrinahelp.com
and katrinadonations.com, which were asking people to make donations
to the relief effort through Paypal. Within days of the Hurricane
Katrina disaster, more than 2,300 websites had sprung up, some
legitimate and some not. Dozens of suspicious sites asking for
donations are being investigated by state and federal authorities.
The FBI had put out a bulletin on Hurricane Katrina scams.
As with all other major disasters, Hurricane Katrina brought
out the best and worst in people and the personal injury and other
lawsuits have been just a reflection of our social conscience
saying no to those who behave badly.
