Gender or Sex Discrimination
Gender or sex discrimination actually may be an attitude of certain
people. However, this has become a social phenomenon in recent
years and more and more people from different parts of the world
are concerned about this phenomenon.
Sex discrimination or gender discrimination may have different
definition in different countries. However, there is a common
belief. It is that when someone is treated unfairly due to the
sex or gender of a person, the ones treating them in an unfair
way can be prosecuted for sex discrimination.
This is especially true in the workplace. If a person does not
get promoted or loses a job simply because they are a man or a
woman, then this is grounds for a wrongful
termination lawsuit and/or a sexual discrimination
lawsuit.
This is actually a kind of prejudice that existed in the world
and has for a long period of time. In the past, people would think
that men are superior while women are inferior.
It was because the labor force was the most important source
for the development of the society. People would farm, fish or
mine in order to earn a living. And all these activities would
require strong laborers who could work using their muscular bodies.
Physiologically, (in general and depending upon the task) women
are not as strong as men due to the nature of the sex, muscular
development and the development of various hormones in the body.
Therefore, women could not get a place in those activities and
they would inevitably be treated in a discriminated way.
However, the world nowadays does not focus solely on those physically
demanding activities. Less physically demanding and more cerebral
activities are the norm and dominating the economies of the world.
The improvement in living conditions enables women to study in
schools and equip themselves with knowledge. Therefore, woman
has made great strides over the past many decades in gaining work
and they realize that they should not be always treated as useless
to the society.
As a result, women started fighting for fair judgment decades
ago. They showed their intelligence and they showed that women
are not worse than men in many aspects (and perhaps better in
others). This made men think deeply about the role of men and
women in the world.
After years of hard work, women have finally gotten most what
they have fought for. One exception is that women only earn a
percent, on a nationwide average, of what men do for doing the
same work at the same job. This kind of gender discrimination
can happen under the radar since salaries are considered private
and rarely published.
Laws specifying sex discrimination are established in different
countries in the world. These laws protect women as well as men
actually. The basic belief behind the law is that all humans should
be treated fairly, without regard to gender.
People need to be treated fairly at work. The boss should not
assign work to a woman but not a man just because they think that
male could not work well in that job. They should judge the work
that needs to be accomplished based on the ability of the employees
but not the gender of them.
Therefore, gender and sex discrimination is regarded as one of
the most important laws in modern society which can improve the
harmony between people in the world. Equal pay for equal work
is no longer about race, but applies to gender as well.
